About

I was born with a congenital syndrome called “Goldenhars”, which affects the development of the skull and soft tissues over it. It also can affect the hearing because of deformities to the outer, middle and inner ear parts.

Over time my hearing deteriorated in my better ear because of lifelong infections, and when I began to miss important things like the clock alarm I reassessed my life and how I was to deal with such problems.. I was given a shaking alarm clock by social services, it did a good job… I hated waking up with that under my pillow so much I barely slept soundly! :D It wouldn’t be a good start to the day, for me or anyone else in the house! :D

I had grown up with dogs, and love the companionship they offer, so I considered applying for a Hearing Dog. Eventually I did, and was found to be borderline in need, but as my hearing is continuing to deteriorated I was accepted onto the scheme. After 3 years waiting a photo of Liffey came in the post, and from that moment life was pretty “different”. :)

I like to think that our partnership is as meaningful to her as it is to me, and can’t thank Hearing Dogs for Deaf people enough for offering me the oportunity to have one of their dogs.

Life is so much more fun now, I don’t have to hear the punch line of jokes to have a laugh any more, Liffey makes me laugh from the moment she jumps on my bed when my alarm goes off.

When I am out on walks with other people, it isn’t so lonely now as they walk along chatting while I am unable to join in because of my hearing loss. She not only keeps me company, she bridges the gap between us as we all play with her.

I hope you enjoy our story, from her perspective. ;) Thank you for your visit.
